How to be humped up on mescaline and tell your friends that you’re alright!

ad•dic•tion n. the state of being given up or having yielded to a habit or practice or to something that is habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma [1]

A South Asian critic once stated that the major industrial societies, in particular the United States, are addicted to nuclear weapons. Such a statement not only illustrates America’s desire to possess nuclear weapons but also correctly defines the mindset behind American officials who claim that society cannot continue without such nuclear weapons.

Just as with a person addicted to narcotics, it cannot not be logically reasoned that America can completely cease the production of nuclear weapons and dispose of those currently in stock, thus quit cold turkey. On the other hand though, it can be reasoned that America’s production of nuclear arms could be slowed and the weapons currently in supply could be decreased, and, over time, a means could be found to eliminate the threat held by nuclear weapons. But just as with an addict, being clean does not mean that the threat of nuclear weapons would still not loom over America.

Keeping things quite and experimenting behind the closed confines of Oak Ridge, TN, American began its devastating, slow suicide, as it took the first hit off the new drug on the street known as atomic power. So that no one would be aware of what exactly was going on America kept Oak Ridge on a tight lock down, just like an addict: shooting up only with a private company and keeping every trip hidden from those around them. In August of 1945 the only two nuclear weapons ever to be put to use were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Just like the first dabbles with a needle and a spoon, the sensation of ending the war was great, Little Boy and Fat Man had achieved their purpose: America was high, and at the time no one gave a moment’s thought as to where this action would lead. Everyone involved was too caught up in watching America unfold as a world superpower to recognize that the power would someday fester into a rotting sore, especially with the gruesome side effects of toxic pollutants and illness being ignored.

As the world entered the Cold War began America’s tolerance got higher and paranoia arose. With every new step forward in nuclear technology that America developed the more America felt the need to make bigger and better weapons. At the same time, the more aware other nations became of America’s nuclear addiction, the more America felt that everyone was out to get them. As a result the feeling to get high off the power of nuclear weapons began to diminish and the need to calm the paranoia grew greater, thus the need for more nukes grew. The more America used the greater the need to hide the warning signs of a damaging life style grew; America began to pull down its sleeves to hide the track marks and cover up the growing number of cases involving nuclear related cancers among plant workers and civilians in the surrounding area. When people would step in and tell America that nuclear weapons were a problem America would make claims like, “We’re not addicted; we just like to get a little high. It’s everyone else in the world that are using nukes for improper reasons!” And so decades past and the addiction that used to take a only few lines now took tens of thousands of lines to get the fix.

The 80’s came and so a greater pressure for America to decrease its use of nuclear weapons was called upon by others, but instead of fixing the problem America just got deeper into the addiction. Now rather than just using America became a dealer, sell its nuclear technology to others, claiming that America would watch these countries to ensure that they would only get a little buzz and would never use nuclear power for evil reasons. But with this came greater pressure to be number one; America had to take part in more nuke use to show the world that they were a force to be reckoned with and that they were stronger than the nuclear problem. This action only enraged those around America, so to quiet the critics began to draw up plans to reduce the number of arms over a period of time, but like any addict America dropped out of its first few times in rehab as America pulled out of treaties.

Now, fifty-eight years after the first hit, America has dug a hole much deeper than it is currently able to climb out of. Even if America was to clean up its act and begin to cut back on nuclear weapons and their production, years of personal treatment would still be needed clean the pollution and heal the people. In spite of any attempt by America to come clean still looms the issue that the world would still have nuclear weapons, and just like the evil conscience there will always be those who say, “everyone else is doing it, why don’t you!” For the threat of nuclear dangers to come to an end the world, as a whole, must go into a clean house: all substances and paraphernalia must be found and destroyed, not just those clearly at hand. If all the nuclear powers were to agree to disarm and some hidden organization, such as a terrorist group, were to hold on to even a single nuke then everyone would just fall back into the addiction.

In order to come to this state of a nuke-free lifestyle America, and the world, must take on a 12-step program to eliminate the addiction [2]:

1. Admit that there is an addiction
America must come to terms that it can not go on the way it is with nuclear weapons. America must admit that there is no good behind nuclear weapons and that they not only threaten to hurt ourselves and other, but nukes can kill!

2. Believe that there is a solution
Having faith in one’s own self plays the most important role in becoming clean. If America cannot envision the possibility of becoming clean then how can it even begin to take the steps needed.

3. Turn over to those who can help
America can no do this alone because the nuclear predicament is not a single issue. To clean up it will take the joined forces of environmentalist, economist, the government, and civilians alike to get rid of the mess.

4. Take a moral inventory
Those involved with nuclear weapons must stop lying and covering up problems. The public needs to be honestly educated upon the issues of the effects of nuclear materials, waste, and their management. Such honesty will help to break any denial that exists.

5. Admit to another person that nukes are wrong
By telling other countries that nukes are wrong two things are achieved: they are able to get involved in solving the nuclear problem and through this open honest a line of trust is developed.

6. Make preparations to disarm
Without a plan or an outline, the task to become clean is a much harder one. For each separate issue involved with nuclear weapons a separate organization or committee should be assigned to handle it. This ensures that the task of cleaning up is properly managed and nothing is overlooked.

7. Remove all nuclear weapons
After achieving the first five steps America, and the world, will be able to being the journey to rid itself of nuclear weapons. This process is a method of progress, not overnight perfection. As stated before, quitting cold turkey is not a realistic option, but over time, with the help of the world, being clean is.

8. Make a list of those harmed by the addiction
Being clean of an addiction is not only an issue with one’s self, but also one with those who have been involved. A list should be made comprising of everyone that has been affected in any way by nuclear weapons, may it be those in Japan affected by the blast, the plant worker that handles the materials each day, or civilians who have had their back yards polluted.

9. Now that a list has been made, make amends
Just recognizing those harmed by the evil side effects of nuclear weapons is not enough. Action must be taken to help and aid such people to recover from what has been done to them, no matter if they are innocent bystanders and if they are those who the harm was intended for.

10. Continue to take an inventory
Just because the problem of nuclear weapons appears to be solved does not mean that it can not reoccur. Steps must be taken to avoid any fallback into the addiction.

11. Seek alternatives
Alternative methods must be put in place of the addiction. The desire for the fix will arise again some day and America must find other ways to solve conflict, may it be through delegation or newer developments in conventional war.

12. Share the message with others
Once independent from the addiction America must do all it can to let other countries know about the terrible effects of nuclear weapons and what they too can do to stop before it is too late.

It is only through steps such as these that America, or any country, can ever hope to rise above the devastating addiction that is nuclear weapons. With each day that passes, the whole that America has dug grows deeper, but even though things may seem dismal it is not too late to turn around and fix the problem, but one day it may be.

I tell you, my man. This is the American Dream in action! We’d be fools not to ride this strange torpedo all the way to the end.
