Well it has been a while since I reviewed an album out of my collection, so I figured that it was about time that I get back to doing so (cause hell, I said I was going to anyhow, so that’s enough reason to do so). So for today I’m going to let Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath spin around the turntable for a while and I am going to do so for two reasons: number one it is my favorite Sabbath album (I feel like picking Paranoid as my favorite is a bit clichç¿) and because this album really touches on all of the sonic abilities these metal monsters of the seventies had.

Right out of the box Sabbath tears into the title track, a distinctly classic Sabbath song: a slow heavy metal riff, a haunting overdubbed guitar solo and Ozzy’s unmistakable vocals screaming and harmonizing all at once. The second track, National Acrobat, calls again to Toni Iomi’s historic metal riffs that drag along and scare the shit out of you. Fluff, the third track on the album, finds the softer side of Sabbath through a dreamy guitar instrumental accompanied by light piano. The band calls to their bluesy roots on the next track in Sabbra Cadabra (which Metallica did a good job of covering on Garage Days) and you can hear the influence that bands like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience had on Black Sabbath. The fifth track, Killing Yourself To Live, finds the Dark Prince singing along to a more progressive Sabbath tune and one that would show as to the direction that the band would take in the future, especially during the Dio lineup. Who Are You is a futuristic metal tune which features Iomi on synth. The final two tracks, Looking for Today and Spiral Architect appear to draw from the same influences as those heard in Sabbara Cadabra, with their more straight-up rock sound and also hint to the sound that Ozzy would carry with him during the early years of his solo career.

All in all a great Sabbath album, on a scale of 1-10, I give it a 7.5, it contains a few classics and some hidden treasures, but nothing so great that you’ll want to play it for your friends every time they come over, but definitely worth having in your collection if you like old school heavy metal.
