The first album by the L.A. based quartet to be reviewed here at Comhra, Waiting for the Sun, by The Doors, just so happens to be one of the first albums I ever bought. Being the third of six albums that the band would release, Waiting is often over looked in my opinion because it is bookshelved by the early success of The Doors’ first two albums and the single Light My Fire and then the closing mystery of the band as Morrison either died or disappeared and legendary songs such as Riders on the Storm and Roadhouse Blues. But in 1968 Morrison, Manzarack, Krieger & Densmore pumped out a even more proof that they are among the greatest bands in rock history.

By kicking the album open with the hit single Hello, I Love You The Doors jump right into their classic recipe keyboard driven riffs and Morrison’s lustful lyrics and deliver what is obviously the biggest hit on the album. Love Street touches on the band’s more light and jazzy mood, whereas the third track, Not to Touch the Earth, embodies all that is the Lizard King as Jim introduces the listener to the first of his screaming vocals from the album. Summer’s Almost Gone is a murky, dreamy, sonnet about the loss of youth in growing old but the mood set by the song is more intriguing than the song itself. Appearing fifth on the track list, Wintertime Love is another snoozer that can only be truly cherished for the wonderful keys which Ray Manzarack treats the audience with, but nothing more. Such is not the case with the following track, Unknown Soldier; an anthem against America’s involvement in the Vietnam Conflict, Morrison not only tells his opinion of the plight of American soldiers during the sixties, he also acts it out in the highly controversially video that compliments this song, where Morrison is tied to a pole in front of a firing squad and shot in the head (the audio to which is included as part of the song). From political poet to artistic approach, The Doors explore the classical soundings of traditional Spanish flavor in Spanish Caravan as Krieger dazzles the listener with his flamingo style playing and then off to a psychedelic trip over the bridge and into the close, which then brings us to the Gypsy styled My Wild Love and features only Morrison’s lead vocals, the band’s backing vocals and Densmore’s percussions. We Could Be So Good Together is about the time that you get up to get yourself a drink or defecate, nothing special, in fact it is a bit of a Doorsy clichöL of a song, but thankfully this is not where the band leaves us. Manzarack paints a musical masterpiece with his work on the piano in Yes, the River Knows as the band again showcase their mastery of jazz, but to me the real jewel for Waiting on the Sun is the closing track, Five to One. Now to be honest I am a bit bias here than anywhere else on this album, mainly because I love a good guitar and that is exactly what you get an earful of in this, longest of all the tracks, 4 minute 24 second track. With the low end of the drums and sythn bass being cut and dry, Krieger’s guitar is able to shine at what may be his best moment in the band’s entire history.

When the dust clears this isn’t the best album by The Doors by any means, but it does have many wonderful pieces that are well worth listening to. Waiting on the Sun really deserves about a 6, but I am going to give it a 6.5 just because of Krieger’s solo on Five to One that closes out the album.
